I was elected Member of Parliament for Leicester South at a by-election in May 2011.
In October 2016 I was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Health, by Jeremy Corbyn, having previously served as Shadow Minister without Portfolio.
I was also in Ed Miliband’s front bench team as Shadow Cabinet Office Minister from October 2013.
Before becoming an MP I worked in the Treasury as a special advisor to Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor, and continued to work for Gordon Brown when he became Prime Minister.
Outside of politics I’m a keen book-worm, and runner. My wife and I have two little girls and live in Leicester.
