The work of an MP centres around dealing with matters that affect people in the constituency. This means attending many local meetings and also face to face discussions with constituents, discussing issues and seeking solutions.

Then of course, there is the need to represent constituents by attending the Houses of Parliament each week, raising issues for debate directly in the chamber.

This page lists some of the speeches and questions raised by Jon in parliamentary sessions. The paragraphs listed contain the introductory text to the speech. For the full text, plus the context in which the speech was made, follow the link at the end of the paragraph.

Oral Answers to Questions - Work and Pensions: G20 Summit
Jonathan Ashworth: Did not the G20 communiqué argue that advanced economies should pursue fiscal consolidation at a pace appropriate to support recovery? Why, then, is the Prime Minister pursuing fiscal consolidation at a pace that has contributed to a double-dip recession? More...

Oral Answers to Questions - Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Civil Service Reform
Jonathan Ashworth: I listened with great interest to what the Minister said about opening up policy development work. I note what he said about the Civil Service Commission, but I wonder whether he could expand on it. I am not making a partisan point, but he will recall answering questions recently about suggestions-allegations and so on-that, for example, Mr Peter Cruddas had influence over the No...More...

Commons Debates - Scrap Metal Theft
Jonathan Ashworth: My hon. Friend talks about thefts from the home, and he is, of course, concentrating on scrap metal theft. May I just tell the House that in Leicester the theft of gold is particularly affecting many Asian families and Asian businesses? I do not think that gold is covered by the legislation to which he just referred, so if the Minister is going to introduce proposals and take steps...More...

Commons Debates - Business of the House
Jonathan Ashworth: A few moments ago, when the Leader of the House cantered through his statistics on child poverty, he accidentally forgot to report to the House that today's figures show that the last Labour Government lifted more than 1 million children out of poverty. Debate on the Address: Jobs and Growth

Speaking in the House of Commons today Jon Ashworth, Member of Parliament for Leicester South, started by saying he thought that the Queen's Speech was extraordinarily flimsy, given that it emanated from a party that is in its second year in government and has been out of power for 13 years.

Jon continued his speech by demanding the Government do more to support small and medium sized businesses in cities like Leicester trade internationally.

With international trade patterns shifting, the Government must help cities like Leicester build on our extensive links with countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey so we can deepen trade and attract investment and jobs to Leicester in the future.
