Jon
Ashworth has written to The Royal Mail to ask for
the Post Box outside Clarendon Park Post Office
to be reinstated.
There has been no Post Box on Queens Road for approaching
three months, and despite being contacted by local
people and Councillors the Royal Mail has still
not replaced it. |
|
|
|
Jon said: “I cannot believe
it has been well over two months since the Post Box
was knocked over and it has still not been replaced.
The Post Office on Queens Road is well used and is part
of a busy and thriving commercial area.”
"It’s time the Royal Mail replaced the Post Box
and stopped inconveniencing local residents and businesses."

Leicester
apprentices share new ‘on the job’ skills with Jon Ashworth MP |

Ten
young people from Leicester were joined by their local
MP to show how they are helping to keep British Gas customers
safe and warm this winter.
Leicester South MP, Jon Ashworth, met with the first ten
apprentices employed by British Gas at its Aylestone Road
contact centre. They joined the 900-strong contact centre
last November.
British Gas Services created 120 new positions at the
contact centre last year to help get ready for winter.
The team now handles around 200,000 customer calls per
month- over a third (38%) more compared with the previous
year.
William Gonga, 22, from Highfields showed Jon how he’s
enjoying putting what he’s learnt so far into practice.
William, who’s now in his first full-time job, said: “I'm
enjoying the apprenticeship a lot. I have confidence now,
I'm learning every day and I enjoy coming to work. It's
the best thing that's happened to me. Helping customers
to get the heating on or hot water working again is a
great feeling. It's such a sense of satisfaction when
you come off the phone knowing you've helped someone.”

Ashworth said; “I enjoyed meeting the apprentices at British
Gas, many of whom are from my constituency, and understanding
the important work they do.”
“The apprentices are helping to keep Britain warm this winter
by taking calls from customers who may need help with their
heating or hot water and getting an engineer out as soon
as is possible.” |

said: “We employ more people in Leicester than any other
part of the country. That’s why we’re pleased to welcome
Jon Ashworth to see how our talented apprentices are part
of a growing team helping customers.”
Across the East Midlands, British Gas currently employs
3,900 people. |

Ashworth MP, and local Councillors, visit factory site |
|
Friday
January 30 2015 |
|
Jon
and Councillors Aqbany, Chowdhury and Dawood met with
local residents on Gwendolen Road who are concerned about
the deliveries made to the BR Environmental Services site.
For a number of months Jon Ashworth, along with the local
Councillors, has been working to resolve the problems
caused by the deliveries to the factory site.
The residents are concerned that the regular deliveries
make parking difficult in the area, endanger road safety,
especially for school children, and cause noise when unloading.
Jon said: “As the local MP I’ve been involved with this
matter for many months now. Although it was confirmed
the factory is not in contravention of any planning laws,
I’m really pleased that a plan of action is now being
taken forward in partnership with the Police and the City
Council. This plan will address the concerns raised by
my constituents.”
Part of this plan has involved the City Council’s Highways
Department installing bollards on the pavement on the
corners of Drinkstone Road.
Councillor Dawood stated: “I’m pleased that these bollards
have been put up so quickly. They will protect people
using the footpath and stop lorries driving onto the footpaths
when turning at the junction."

Councillor
Dawood stated: “I’m pleased that these bollards have been
put up so quickly. They will protect people using the footpath
and stop lorries driving onto the footpaths when turning
at the junction.”
Other initiatives include joint Police and City Council
parking enforcement exercises, and the Police writing to
BR Environmental to meet to discuss the better management
of large goods vehicles onto the site.
Key to the success of the joint plan of action will be local
residents reporting noise to the Environmental Health Noise
Team at the City Council.

Ashworth MP and Local Councillors, visit crash site |
|
Friday
January 23 2015 |
|
Jon,
and Councillors Cutkelvin and Clarke, met with Jodie Cooper
and Council officers to look at ways of improving road
safety on Saffron Lane.
Jon tweeted Jodie following the story in the Mercury about
her e-petition to have a speed camera on Saffron Lane.
A meeting was then held in late November between Jodie
and Jon and Councillor Cutkelvin, who represents the Saffron
area.
As a result of this meeting a site visit was arranged
that included the City Council’s Head of Highways and
other Council staff.
Jon said: “As the local MP I always want to work with
people I represent, and I hope today’s meeting will lead
to road safety improvements. It was clear from
the meeting I had with Jodie that something has to be
done. As well as the tragic incident that led to the death
of Paige Jackson and her unborn child, I’m aware there
have been other car crashes on that stretch of Saffron
Lane.”
Jodie Cooper, who went to school with Paige, commented:
“I am pleased that Jon and Councillor Cutkelvin were able
to organise this visit. I now have over 1700 signatures
on my petition which shows the strength of feeling in
the area. |
|
|
 |
|
I hope the meeting will lead to the road improvements that
are greatly needed to make the road safer for all.”
Depending upon the outcome of Friday’s site meeting possible
future actions to take the campaign forward include organising
a public meeting or delivering a survey in the local area.
Councillor Cutkelvin stated: “It is important that we explore
all of the options in making this a safer stretch of road.
I will continue to work closely with residents and Council
officers to make this happen.”

Ashworth MP welcomes decision to reverse ‘mango ban’ |
|
Tuesday
January 20 2015 |
|
Jon
Ashworth has today welcomed news that the ban on importing
India’s famous Alphonso mangoes has been lifted.
The ban was announced in April last year, and at the time
Jon wrote to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs raising his deep concerns. He also raised
the issue in September, as the ban threatened to adversely
affect wholesalers, retailers and many Indian restaurants
in Leicester.
However, today the European Union voted to lift its ban,
following significant improvements in India’s mango export
system.
Jon stated: “This is fantastic news for businesses in
Leicester. Now that the ban has been lifted, retailers
can go about their business and customers can enjoy these
mangoes again – a mango lasi on Evington Road can be a
real treat!”
“I’d also like to congratulate the National Asian Business
Association for running such a good campaign on this.
I’d contacted Government Ministers myself, but the work
done by NABA in pressing the issue has really been impressive.”
Alphonso mango imports will resume in one month, once
the new EU legislation has been formally published. |

Jon
Ashworth MP and local councillor Adam Clarke, visit play area
to meet residents and accept petitions |
|
Friday
January 16 2015 |
|
Speaking
before the visit, Jon said: “I have recently had
concerns raised with me about the condition of this
relatively new play area. As the MP for the area,
and the father of two young children, as well as
wanting to meet local residents and listening to
their views I wanted to see the play area for myself.
I am particularly concerned about the lack of fencing
between the pay area and the canal.”
The privately owned Aylestone play area is the subject
of two petitions calling for cost, safety and anti-social
behaviour issues to be addressed. The play area
was developed by Bloors Homes Midlands as part of
the planning consent for the Otters Bank development.
Cllr Clarke stated: “The play area doesn’t look
anything like the original plans and the council
assures me they have raised this with the developer
and with Greenbelt, the company that now manages
the site.”
“I am determined to find a way of persuading those
responsible for the play area to do more to ensure
it is safe, well managed and of decent quality.”
Parents Katie Sone and Rebecca Wooster, both of
Aylestone, have led a petition raising safety concerns.
The petition states that they were delighted to
see a new play area being installed at the corner
of Disraeli Street and Granby Road as part of a
much needed housing development and that the play
area is well used.
|
|
|
|
However, they deplore
Bloors' corner cutting and lack of attention to quality
and safety. The petition points out that there is a
lack of fencing between the play area and the canal
edge. Their petition has 165 names.
Brian Potter who lives on the new Otters Bank development,
has gathered 59 names to a petition calling on those
responsible for the play area to pay for its upkeep
and not residents.
The petition states that many residents are hard-up
pensioners with no use for a play area. Mr Potter, and
those that have signed the petition, are angry that
residents have been told they will have to pay for damage
to the play area which they think is in the wrong place,
is unsafe and is attracting anti-social behaviour.
Residents who have signed the petition say they are
disgusted that Greenbelt and Bloors have mismanaged
the play area and are charging them with issues associated
with its upkeep. They are calling for those responsible
for the play area to take immediate action to satisfy
residents of Otters Bank in a way that does not leave
children without a local play area.
Aylestone Councillor Adam Clarke commented:
“It is very close to residential
properties, which is impacting on people’s lives. We
demand a good, safe and well managed play area that
doesn’t leave residents out of pocket. Aylestone residents
deserve nothing less.”

Ashworth MP today led a House of Commons Debate on the plight
of the Rohingya Muslims in Burma |
|
Wednesday
January 14 2015 |
|
Since
the outbreak of violence in 2012, Rohingya in Burma
have faced persecution and are denied basic human
rights. At the time of the first outbreak in 2012
Jon led a debate in Parliament on the issue and
pushed for humanitarian assistance and access to
justice in the country.
Unfortunately, the plight of the Rohingya community
continues. There are currently 140,000 Rohingya
in the state of Arakan who live in squalid camps,
and are denied access to basic necessities like
food, clean water and healthcare.
|
|
|
|
The restrictive citizenship
laws also mean that Rohingya are treated as illegal
immigrants and not even recognised by the Burmese state.
These human rights abuses continue, and this is why
Jon led another debate in Parliament today, which was
attended by the Foreign Office Minister.

“Put
Fans First” in year of Rugby World Cup urges Jon Ashworth MP as
Tory led Government opposes ticket tout ban |
|
Tuesday
January 13 2015 |
|
Jon
Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, today called
on the Government to put fans first by dropping
its opposition to tackling ticket touting.
Yesterday Tory MPs in Parliament voted against proposals
to tackle ticket touting as part of the Consumer
Rights Bill. A cross-party group of Lords and MPs
have made proposals on this issue which Labour MPs
supported. However, the Tory Government last night
rejected all these measures.
Following the House of Commons vote, Jon said: “The
Culture Secretary and Tory MPs are completely out
of touch on this - ticket touts aren’t ‘classic
entrepreneurs’ but are ripping off fans by buying
up tickets and then reselling them at massively
inflated prices. They use special programmes to
bulk purchase tickets as soon as they go on sale,
and ordinary fans don’t stand a chance of buying
original tickets online”
“Leicester hosts events at DeMontfort Hall, the
Welford Road rugby ground, the Kingpower Stadium
and at Leicestershire County Cricket Club. In 2015
as well as continuing to host premier league football
we will also be a host Rugby World Cup games. I
am deeply concerned that unless the government take
action against ticket touts many fans will be ripped
off.” |
|
|
|
Last night in the House
of Commons, Tory MPs opposed measure that would have
ensured that websites which facilitate the resale of
tickets for sporting, musical or cultural events
provide information about the identity of the seller
of the ticket. The amendment would have required
the seller to provide, and the website to publish,
all relevant information about the ticket, including
the face value, restrictions on the ticket, location
of the seat where relevant and the booking identification
or reference number. The seller would also be
required to state where the ticket is sold in contravention
of terms and conditions agreed by the original
purchaser.
Websites would also have had to immediately
remove tickets from sale when the event organisers informed
them that the relevant information was inaccurate
or incomplete. Information about tickets being sold
in contravention of terms and conditions would have
to be prominently displayed at every stage of the purchasing
process.
Jon commented further: “MPs across Parliament support
taking action, as do major sports bodies, cultural institutes
and music industry representatives. I am deeply disappointed
that the Tory Government refused to follow our lead
and take action last night.”

Jon
Ashworth MP urges action in House of Commons to relieve pressures
faced in Leicester A&E |
|
Wednesday
January 7 2015 |
|
Jon
Ashworth has expressed concerns amid recent news that
NHS hospitals across the country are facing A&E crises,
and urged the Health Secretary to take action.
Yesterday it emerged that hospitals in England have struggled
to cope with the demands of NHS pressures over winter.
The Government set a target that 95% of patients in A&E
should be seen within four hours, but performance at the
end of last year was only 92.6% in England.
Hospitals in Leicester fell well below the 95% target,
only managing to see 87.5% of patients within the four
hour waiting time. News also broke yesterday that University
Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is currently on an ‘internal
major incident’ because of the pressures.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Jon said:
“The Secretary of State will know that major incident
status was declared at the Leicester hospitals this week.
I believe that is the seventh time in the previous three
months. In the week before Christmas at Leicester Royal
in my constituency, just 67% of patients were seen within
the four hour target and clinicians who are working flat
out expect pressures to increase over the next months.
So can the Secretary of State tell me what he is now going
to do to support clinicians in Leicester and get a grip
of the situation?” |
|
|
After
speaking in the Chamber, Jon commented further: “I want
to be very clear and say that this isn’t the fault of
NHS staff. They’re doing a tremendous job trying to keep
our local hospitals running, but they’re facing unprecedented
pressures and are having to do the best they can under
the circumstances.”
“I wanted the Government to today explain how they are
now going to get a grip of the situation. Sadly the Government
were unable to explain how they will support Leicester
hospitals to cope with the increased pressures clinicians
expect over the next three months.”
