Jon Ashworth MP fasted for the day as part of Ramadan

Friday July 10 2015

Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, fasted for the day as part of Ramadan.

Jon said: “I have fasted for a number of years now since being elected as a local Member of Parliament. As Ramadan is such an important time for so many families across Leicester, I wanted to show my support for the local community and take part in Ramadan in my own small way.”

Jon started the day early in the morning with Sehri at the Masjid Umar Mosque on Evington Drive.

Jon broke his fast with dates and water, Iftar, at the Islamic Centre Leicester. The Islamic Centre hosted ‘The Big Iftar’, which is a unique event that builds lasting trust through the simple, but crucial, act of encouraging people, regardless of their background, to break bread together.

Jon commented: “I fasted the whole day, which at times was difficult, but like many Muslims I went about my day as usual.”

Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, supports Catch the Bus Week

Thursday July 2 2015

Jon is encouraging people who do not usually take the bus to give it a try during Catch the Bus Week, which runs from 29 June to 5 July.

Jon stated: “Buses play a pivotal role in keeping the City moving and are a cost effective way to reduce road congestion and cut carbon emissions in Leicester.”

There are five billion bus journeys in Great Britain every year, with one billion to or from work, with more people jumping on the bus than all other forms of public transport combined.

Jon commented: “I often get the bus when travelling around the City, and greater use of buses will help transform our communities into cleaner, greener and less congested places to live and work.”
