Jon Ashworth MP attended the launch of the Confederation of Indian Organisations (UK) Stroke Project |
Saturday April 28 2012 |
|
The Confederation of Indian Organisations is a national organisation that works to ensure the development and recognition of the role of the South Asian voluntary and community sector.
Jon said: “Given the Confederation's excellent community links and community-based research it is perfectly placed to establish the Stroke Prevention & Education Project.”
“This Project will set up outreach advocacy and support services in the East Midlands for people from South Asian Communities who have suffered from a stroke or are at a high risk.”
People from South Asia are at a higher risk of suffering a stroke than Europeans and it is more likely to be fatal.
|
|
|
Vinod Kotecha, the Project Co-ordinator, stated: “Despite the higher risks of suffering a stroke, there is a lower uptake of Social Care Services by South Asian Communities. So a key aim of the Project is to improve access to Health and Social Care services following a stroke.”
The Project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund for three years.
Jon commented: “It is vital to raise awareness and prevent and reduce the incidence of stroke within the South Asian Communities. At the same time for those that have suffered from a stroke it is crucial that their confidence and skills are restored.”

Jon Ashworth MP and Shadow Chief Secretary Rachel Reeves MP met local shopkeepers warning about a 'samosa tax' |
Thursday April 12 2012 |
|
Jon Ashworth MP and Shadow Chief Secretary Rachel Reeves MP met local shopkeepers on Evington Road and warned that a 'samosa tax' might hit Leicester.
Leicester South MP Jon Ashworth, and Shadow Chief Secretary Rachel Reeves MP, visited small retailers on Evington Road to listen to concerns about the local economy and hear what more needs to be done to support the Leicester business community.
Jon Ashworth MP said: “I'm delighted to welcome a member of our Shadow Cabinet - Rachel Reeves MP - to Leicester to meet local small business owners and listen to their concerns and views.”
“Small businesses are the backbone of the Leicester economy and as the local MP I want to make sure we do all we can to get the local economy moving and attract new jobs to the area.”
“That's why I'm particularly worried there is confusion over whether Leicester will be hit by a 'samosa tax' following the government's decision to levy VAT on foods such as pasties ‘sold at above ambient room temperature'.”
|
|
|
“Local retailers who bake and sell samosas need certainty, not confusion, at this time when the economy is so in the doldrums.” “I'll be writing to HMRC and George Osborne to demand they clear up this confusion as soon as possible.”
Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rachel Reeves MP said: “George Osborne's budget gets worse and worse by the day. Last week families were hit by an average of £511 each. Pastie tax has made him a laughing stock. And there is outrage that all the while he has given a tax cut of over £40,000 to 14,000 millionaires.”
“Now we hear that samosa shops in Leicester and elsewhere could be hit with a 20 per cent VAT hike - but the Chancellor's change is so chaotic and rushed nobody can give them a straight answer. Uncertainty can mean significant damage is done to small businesses like these.” |
