Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, visits Central Mosque

Today, Jon held his regular monthly advice session at the Central Mosque on Conduit Street. As always, before starting his advice session, Jon greeted the congregation after Friday Prayers.
Jon said: “I visit the Central Mosque and other Mosques regularly so that I can take up any problems people may have, and listen to their views on government actions or decisions.”
“This month, the approaching EU Referendum was a popular topic of conversation.”

Following the ‘meet and greet’ Jon met numerous constituents who had issues with their housing, social services, benefits, on-going anti-social behaviour and Council Tax.
Jon commented: “I would like to thank the local Councillors who also attend the advice sessions. Having the Councillors present along with the Member of Parliament gives a more in-depth service to my constituents.” |

Jon Ashworth MP opens the new Play and Learning Zone at Marriott Primary School

Jon visited Marriott Primary School to open the new Play and Learning Zone.
Jon said: “It was great returning to Marriott Primary and to officially open the Play and Learning Zone. It is fantastic that the local community has helped to raise some of the money needed for this outdoor classroom.”
“I’ve also been told that the outdoor classroom will be used to teach the children about pollination as Marriott Primary plans to become a pollination school which is good news.”
The Play and Learning Zone is situated in a part of the school grounds that was not being used for anything. It was funded through the school budget and fundraising within the school and the community.
The area, that will now be regularly used by children aged 3 to 5 years of age, has a fantastic pirate ship, a stage, large climbing area, explorative sand-pit, messy kitchen, large water zone, den building poles and an area for the school’s balance bikes.
Sheila Crichton, Marriott’s Headteacher, commented: “An amazing outdoor Learning Zone has been created at Marriott Primary to ensure that our young children get frequent and regular opportunities to explore and learn in the outdoor environment.
Our new Learning Zone has been designed to meet the needs of the Early Year Curriculum and to support active educational activities for children in Key Stage 1.”

| “Learning outside the classroom supports the development of healthy and active lifestyles by offering children opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement, and promoting a sense of well-being. Marriott’s Learning Zone offers space and therefore is particularly important to those children who learn best through active movement. Very young children learn predominately through their sensory and physical experiences and at Marriott we are determined to create an environment that offers this from the very beginning of their educational journey.” |

Jon Ashworth MP opens the Mango Tree Community Activities Project

Jon visited the West Indian Senior Citizens Project when first elected and re-visited it today.
As part of his visit Jon officially launched the Mango Tree Community Activities project. This is a joint initiative between the West Indian Senior Citizens Project and Leicester Ageing Together.
The Mango Tree Community Activities are aimed at addressing the issue of isolation and loneliness in people 50 years of age and above.
Jon stated: “It has been a while since I visited the West Indian Senior Citizens Project and it was great to seeing old and new faces.”
“The West Indian Senior Citizens Project plays an important role in the community and I am pleased I can support the new Mango Tree scheme.”
The West Indian Senior Citizens Project is based at the Caribbean Court on 35 Lincoln Street. It offers a Lunch Club, Day Care, Mobile Meal Services and other services for elderly African Caribbean people in Leicester and Leicestershire.
Pamela Campbell-Morris, ‘Older & Bolder’ Development Officer at the West Indian Senior Citizens/ Leicester Ageing Together Project, commented: “It is a pleasure to have Jon Ashworth MP, Local Councillors and invited guests to our organisation to see the wonderful early intervention and prevention work that is undertaken with our elders, in ensuring that fundamental support is offered to address their holistic needs as African, African Caribbean elders and their carers.”
“Leicester Ageing Together Project recognises that isolation is a problem in communities, not just individuals, and so works to change the environment around the older person, including community services and community attitudes.”
