Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, criticises NHS England on its consultation event for The Glenfield |
Tuesday
February 28 2017 |
As part of the consultation on the Glenfield’s Children’s Heart services NHS England is holding a ‘Question Time’-style event in just over a week on 9 March |
Jon stated: “I wrote to NHS England last week to raise my concerns about the event at the Tigers Stadium. I am extremely concerned at the low number of places available for the public to attend this event.”
“Given that the purpose of the event is to provide people with an opportunity to hear more about the proposals, and to ask questions about the proposed plans, it is extremely unsatisfactory that only 96 tickets, or seats, were allocated to the public.”
Jon has received a response to his letter where it is stated that NHS England has worked with the venue to increase the capacity of the room to allow more people to attend.
Jon commented: “An increase from 96 to 120 is simply not good enough. It is clear from the previous consultation to stop heart surgery at the Glenfield that there is a great deal of support to maintain it. There have already been two well attended marches supporting the campaign to keep Children’s Hearts services at Glenfield at the end of last year and earlier this month.”
“I would encourage anyone who would like to attend to event at the Tigers ground to register with NHS England as they will they will consider another event in Leicester if there is the demand for one.”
“I understand that there will be a number of supporters who have not been able to secure a place meeting outside the venue to show their support, and if you would like to join them please feel free to come along from 4.30pm.
The event will be available via web- link – all details are available on the NHS England website."

Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, criticises Leicester CCG for proposing cuts to the continuing healthcare provision |
Monday
February 27 2017 |
Jon has been contacted by constituents regarding the proposed changes to the funding of Continuing Healthcare that Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group, along with East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG and West Leicestershire CCG, are consulting on |
Jon has written to Leicester City CCG requesting that the proposals are reconsidered or at the very least that the consultation is delayed until the Sustainability and Transformation Plan for the area is consulted on.
Jon said: “I have been contacted by many constituents about the suggested proposals which include giving the CCG the right to decide which residential care facility people are accommodated in.
It is proposed that the CCGs will consider the individuals first choice of residential care facility but that the CCG will retain the right to insist on using one of their preferred providers. This could mean that people could be placed somewhere they do not want to live, potentially far away from family and friends.”
The suggested proposals also include capping the amount of money spent on providing care in an individual's home by comparing it to the cost of a residential care home.
Jon commented: “I am very concerned that the cost of care needed in the community setting will be more than the cap set. As a result a person could be forced to live in residential care or live at home with insufficient levels of care.”
“If these proposals are implemented, people whose care in their own home is funded by the NHS because of their complex healthcare needs will be faced with the prospect of accepting a drastic reduction to their care funding.”
This review may in fact increase financial demands on the NHS. If care packages are reduced to an unsafe level, it could result in many people developing further health complications which will could require hospitalisation and end up costing the NHS substantially more money in the long term.
Jon stated: “This review is fundamentally unreasonable as it is targeting some of the most vulnerable members of society, and it also undermines people’s right to live independently in the community where possible.”

Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, visited Gelato Village to discover the secrets of traditional Gelato making |
Friday
February 10 2017 |
On Friday 10 February Jon visited Gelato Village, Leicester’s only authentic Italian gelateria to learn about the local business. |
Jon received the invitation having expressed an interest in finding out more about award-winning local business at the Global Flavours of Leicestershire showcase held at the Houses of Parliament in October 2016.
Jon said: “It was my pleasure to visit such a prominent local business in the centre of Leicester and to learn about fine art of gelato making. It was good to see that Gelato Village uses local milk and cream for their gelato.”
Co-owners Daniele Taverna and Antonio De Vecchi gave Jon a private tour of their in-house Gelato Laboratory; where the Maestro Gelatiere uses fresh ingredients from Leicestershire and beyond to make his own-recipe gelato and sorbetto.
Daniele Taverna, co-owner of the Gelato Village, said: “We care greatly about the quality of our ingredients and we work hard to create recipes which do those ingredients justice. It was great pleasure to introduce our local Member of Parliament to our artisan gelato.”

Jon took the opportunity to sample a number of flavours, including Italian favourites like tiramisu, before finally settling on a combination of the popular salted caramel, ‘Richard III’, with rose and fruits of the forest, and ‘Gelato di Campioni’- created in support of Leicester City Football Club.
Jon commented: “I really enjoyed my visit to Gelato Village. All the samples were amazing, as was the cup of three flavours. I definitely want to come back.” |

Jon Ashworth, MP for Leicester South, named as an Ambassador for the Leicester Cathedral Revealed Project |
Jon visited Leicester Cathedral to be updated on the Leicester Cathedral Revealed Project. |
Jon has been involved with the Project for a number of months and today he was named an Ambassador.
Speaking before the visit, Jon said: “I am a strong supporter of this Project which aims to celebrate the Cathedral’s Victorian heritage as well as creating new exhibition, learning and engagement spaces. It is an honour to be asked to be an Ambassador for the project, and I will do all that I can to ensure that these exciting plans become a reality.”
As an Ambassador Jon will promote the Project and be the link between the Cathedral and all the Members of Parliament in the City and the County who are all supportive of the Project.
Following the reinterment of King Richard III in March 2015, the Cathedral now attracts up to 200,000 tourist visitors a year, as well as many others for services, events and personal prayer. A church has stood on the site since at least the 11th century, and was significantly rebuilt under the leadership of Canon David Vaughan in the mid-19th century. It was designated a cathedral in 1927.
Revd Pete Hobson, Project Director, commented: “This will be the first major works of improvement to our cathedral since it gained that status 90 years ago, apart from the addition of some vestries in the 1930s and the more recent work around the reinterment of King Richard III.”
"The project will make the cathedral better able to fulfill all its purposes in the 21st century, and enable us to offer very large numbers of visitors a more effective welcome and richer insights into a neglected part of our common history and heritage.” |

Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, backs breathing space for families in problem debt |
Wednesday
February 1 2017 |
Jon has backed calls for a new scheme to help thousands of families regain control of their finances as data from the Bank of England shows unsecure household debt rising at its fastest rate since the financial crisis. |
Debt often strikes when people experience sudden changes in circumstances such as job loss or ill health. Aggressive action from creditors and pressure to repay debts at an unaffordable rate can lead families to cut back on everyday essentials like food, or even take out other expensive loans or fall further behind on essential bills.
The rise in personal borrowing has led to mounting concern that households who get into debt need safer ways to manage financial difficulties.
Jon has written to the Government to ask it to introduce the ‘Breathing Space’ scheme that would offer people seeking debt advice a 12-month legal protection from mounting interest, charges and enforcement action. The scheme would build on protections offered under the Debt Arrangement Scheme in Scotland, which has made sure that families sticking to an affordable repayment plan agreed with their creditors are not harried or hassled for the duration of that plan.
Jon said: “It can’t be right that children’s mental health and happiness is suffering as a result of creditors unfairly escalating people’s problems."
“Families in problem debt need time and space to get back on their feet. By providing a period free from additional interest, charges and enforcement action, the Breathing Space scheme would help families recover their financial situation and put in place a plan to affordably repay their debts.”
StepChange Debt Charity and The Children’s Society estimate that in Leicester South Constituency alone there are 4,149 families with 7,181 children living with problem debt.
Jon commented: “I am pleased that the Breathing Space proposal has widespread cross-party support, including from the Work and Pensions Select Committee and the APPG on Debt and Personal Finance. The Government now needs to act by putting a comprehensive Breathing Space scheme in place.”
