Sunday June 19 2016 |

Today, Jon called in to Clarendon Park’s Annual Summer Fair, which took place from 11am to 5pm.
Jon always visits the fair, but this year he made a presentation to Janet Tibbey BEM, Manager of the Clarendon Park Playgroup.

Janet was awarded a British Empire Medal in 2012 after being nominated by grateful parents.
Local parents are sad to see Janet go as she has provided a warm and happy place for young children, from setting up each day at 7am to preparing activities on a Friday night.

Jon Ashworth MP visits South Lodge care home

Jon visited South Lodge care home as part of National Care Home Open Day. This successful initiative organised by Care England is being held for the fourth year in a row.

National Care Home Day aims to reinforce connections within local communities and showcase the excellent care being provided by care staff across the UK. It is a great opportunity for the public to see the range of care services available and for care homes to establish valuable connections.

Jon Ashworth MP calls on Samworth Brothers to reinstate a Trade Union activist |
Tuesday June 14 2016 |
Jon said: “My Party had concerns over the introduction of the so called National Living Wage as it is not a true ‘living wage’. But I was astounded to learn from the Bakers Union, BFAWU, that Samworth Brothers are making their own workers pay for the National Living Wage.
“The Leicestershire-based food giant, Samworth Brothers, have used the introduction of the National Living Wage to cut back on their staff’s paid breaks and stopped the unsociable hours’ premium rates and overtime.”
“The changes to staff’s working conditions resulted in a hundreds joining the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union.”
“It is disgraceful that one of the leading Union organisers who has spoken out against the pay restructuring was sacked earlier this month. Kumaran Bose was sacked after working for Samworth Brothers for 12 years. Kumaran Bose was sacked with no disciplinary record at Samworth Brothers."
"In fact, it appears that Kumaran’s only so called crime was to recruit workers at Samworth Brothers to the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union”
“I have written to Samworth Brothers to raise my concerns over the sacking of Kumaran Bose and to request that BFAWU is granted formal recognition at the site. I encourage all the workers to join BAFWU and to stand up for a fair and decent pay.”
“I have also asked The Chancellor and the Business Secretary if they have recently met Mark Samworth and whether he attended events requiring very large donations to the Tory Party. I was told that the lists of who The Chancellor and the Business Secretary have met will be released in due course.” |

Jon Ashworth MP shocked with the University of Leicester’s decision to stop
Lifelong Learning |
Thursday June 9 2016 |
Yesterday, 8 June, the University of Leicester announced that it plans to accept no new Lifelong Learning students. Once existing students have completed their current course, the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning will close.
Jon stated: “I am shocked and saddened at this decision of the University. At the time that the University closed Vaughan College at St Nicholas Circle, I raised my concerns that this would ultimately lead to the demise of adult education by the University. I was told this would not happen and that the University remained committed to adult education and lifelong learning.”
“Now, within three years, the University has announced its intention to shut the whole of the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning. I have today written to the Vice Chancellor at the University expressing my concerns and sadness at this decision.”
“This decision flies in the face of the views of the University’s Registrar and Chief Operating Officer that he recently expressed in the Leicester Mercury. In this piece the Registrar stated the University’s commitment to work in and with the city of Leicester to improve economic, social and cultural wellbeing.”
“Closing the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning will not help to improve the City’s economic, social and cultural wellbeing. I have also written to the Secretary of State for Education and the Minister for Universities to raise my concerns.”
The Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning is the only provider of face-to-face, part-time, evening, certificated, Higher Education in the region.
There is a ninety day consultation period.
All staff in the Vaughan Centre have been made officially 'at risk of redundancy'. |
