Jon Ashworth MP visited Pukaar News and met with Romail Gulzar, the Managing Editor.
Pukaar News is a leading independent agency providing news to television channels worldwide and provides public relations solutions for a range of businesses.
Jon commented:“I was particularly interested in hearing about the recently launched Pukaar Magazine which is a quarterly publication for the community of Leicester.”
“This Magazine, which is also available online, has various articles and news that covers the diverse City of Leicester.”

Jon visited Leicester Bakery Ltd to find out how MPs can best support local businesses in Leicester, especially given the current economic climate. He met with staff and toured the site.
Leicester Bakery Ltd was established in 1984 and is a recognised market leader in the manufacture of speciality breads, in particular Pitta and Naan breads. It employs 25 people and exports to Europe as well as distributes goods all over the UK.
Jon stated: “As the local MP, it is vital that I hear at first-hand what is needed to support businesses in my Constituency and the whole of Leicester. With the economy having entered into a ‘double dip recession', politicians have to listen to local businesses."
“In Leicester we have great expertise in food manufacturing which is one of our great export successes as a City. I strongly believe we need to do more to support local businesses, such as those working in food manufacturing, to grow and expand further in the future.”

This visit was followed by a meeting with key local business leaders hosted by the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce's Chief Executive, Martin Traynor.
At this meeting Jon discussed with local business owners the current economic climate and what the City Council and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership see as the key factors for economic growth in the City.
Jon commented: “Since my election I've always said jobs and investment is my top priority for Leicester South. I'm looking forwarding to discussing with local small businesses what we need to do to boost our economy and tackle our unacceptable unemployment rates.” |

Jon Ashworth MP read to children at Lansdowne Sure Start Children Centre as part of National Bookstart Week.
Jon visited Lansdowne Children Centre and met with children, parents and staff on Friday 15 June. Jon read to children as part of National Bookstart week.
Before the visit Jon said: “As a father I know how important reading to children is. As part of National Bookstart week I will be reading to local children at one of our brilliant Sure Start Centres.”
“I really can’t emphasise enough the importance for parents and carers of sharing and enjoying books with babies and children.”
“That’s why I have nothing but praise for Bookstart who gift books to babies and toddlers. It’s never too early to read to your children, with babies recognising the sound of their parents’ or carers’ voice.”
Bookstart, which provides free book backs at three stages of a child’s development, is celebrating its 20th year anniversary. As part of these celebrations Jon has pledged to share 20 books in 2012.
Jon commented: “Bookstart is one of the many programmes that helps improve a child’s wellbeing and is part of the overall strategy to defeat child poverty, with half of families having no books for babies until this excellent scheme was introduced. I encourage everyone to pledge their support to Bookstart.”

“This week an important report showed that under the last government child poverty reduced by 900,000 children in the UK. But in Leicester we have too high a level of child poverty and I fear that our child poverty levels may get worse because of the government's deep unfair cuts whether to tax credits or other programmes.”
“For example, the government has already reduced its funding for Bookstart by 70% and if it cuts funding altogether the £21 million donated by publishers will also be lost, in addition to the priceless benefits that will be lost to our children.” |

Jon Ashworth MP visited shops and businesses on Queens Road on Friday 15 June.
Following on from being ‘out and about' in Knighton Fields last Saturday, Jon visited shops and businesses on Queens Road with Disability Rights Campaigners, Andy Morris and Sally Williams.

Jon stated:“I was contacted by Andy to see for myself the difficulties faced by disabled people as they go about their daily business. I am grateful to the shop owners who gave us their time to discuss the various issues with Andy, Sally and me. As the MP for Leicester South I am here to assist people, where possible, all year round.”

Jon Ashworth MP attended the Diamond Jubilee celebrations organised by Leicester's Muslim Khatri Association, Saturday 9 June.
Jon was one of the guest speakers.Jon stated: "I was delighted to join with the Muslim Khatri Association and celebrate Her Majesty's 60 years of service."
It was a huge honour for Leicester to have hosted Her Majesty for the start of her Diamond Jubilee tour.

"People of all faiths and all backgrounds welcomed their Queen to Leicester that day. I am immensely proud of the huge diversity of our city which is why I was honoured to speak at the MKA's celebrations."

Jon Ashworth MP visited residents in the Knighton Fields area of Leicester South on Saturday 9 June.
Jon is regularly ‘out and about' in his Constituency meeting people and taking up any issues or concerns they may have.
Jon stated:“It is important that people meet their MP all year round, and not just at election time. Given the spending cuts it is vital that people know that I am on their side in these tough times.”
Jon was accompanied by local Councillor Bill Shelton and local activists.

Jon commented: “I have a programme of regular ‘roving street surgeries' throughout Leicester South. By knocking on people's doors I get to meet people who do not normally visit my office. If there are any particular streets, or areas, people want me to visit then please contact my office.”
