Merry Christmas to everyone in Leicester |
Thursday December 22 2011 |
|
Christmas is such a special time of year where we celebrate the birth of Christ and spend important time with family and friends.
I'm looking forward to spending time with my 7 month old daughter, my wife and all the extended family.
But I also know Christmas can be a difficult time of year so please don't feel alone. The hardworking volunteers at the Samaritans of Leicester on 08457 90 90 90 are there to help.
|
|
I also want to pay tribute to everyone who will be working over Christmas especially our emergency services and of course our brave men and women serving our country in our armed forces who will be abroad this Christmas away from their families.
So finally let me wish everyone in Leicester a very happy Christmas and a happy New Year. I'll look forward to seeing you all again in 2012.

Jon Ashworth MP opens Christmas Fete that shows true ‘Saff' and Neston Gardens |
Wednesday December 21 2011 |
|
Jon Ashworth MP opened the Saff and Neston Gardens Christmas Fete at the Kingfisher on Wednesday 21 December which was organised by residents, local Councillors and community workers.
Following the negative portrayal of The Saffron Lane Estate and Neston Gardens on a TV documentary earlier this year, Jon Ashworth and Councillors suggested to local residents that we come together to demonstrate the true community spirit of the Estate.
Jon Ashworth commented: “Many local residents thought the portrayal of the Saffron Lane estate and Neston Gardens on the Tonight programme was unfair. That's why last summer following a community clean up day in the area Councillors and I organised, we decided to pull together this Christmas event to show there is in fact a real community spirit on the Saff and Neston Gardens.”
“I know Baroness Newlove is not able to make the event but I'm sure she would agree it's a brilliant example of how there is a strong community on the Saffron Lane Estate.”
“I really want to congratulate all the residents who have worked so hard to make this event happen but especially May Jones and Councillor Elly Cutkelvin who between them have been the driving force in organising this Christmas Fete at the Kingfisher.”
Councillor Cutkelvin stated: “Following the negative image of the area created by the ‘Tonight' programme, the Kingfisher event shows the real Saff – one that the local community can be very proud of. The Christmas event is in the Neston Gardens and Neston Road area of the Estate which had a reputation for anti social behaviour but has changed beyond all recognition over recent years.”
|
|
This Christmas event, which received £1,600 from the Near Neighbours programme, brings people together at a time of year when the importance of family, faith and neighbourliness is most visible.
There were numerous stalls in the Centre including biscuit decorating, face painting and jewellery and Santa with gifts for local children. In the grounds of the Centre there were Billy Bates Fair and youth activities, including laser quest.
Local resident, May Jones, who has lived in Neston Gardens for 14 years, commented: “This is yet another example showing the Saff not as it was portrayed on TV, but that people do pull together for each other.”
Mr Suleman Nagdi of the Federation of Muslim Organisations added: “I commend the initiative of the Saffron Lane community as they take positive and exciting steps to enable people of all cultures, faiths and ethnicities to meet and celebrate living together in peace and harmony in the area”. |

Jon Ashworth MP writes to Prime Minister for Leicester businesses |
Wednesday December 21 2011 |
|
Jon Ashworth has today written to the Prime Minister to seek his intervention following the decision of Leicestershire Police Authority that Leicester businesses affected by disturbances during the riots in August this year will not be entitled to claim compensation for damage caused.
In his letter to the Prime Minister Jon Ashworth points out that many Leicester business people whose property had been damaged during the disturbances in Leicester felt reassured by his remarks in the House of Commons on 11 August 2011 when he said: “Any individual, homeowner or business that has suffered damage to or loss of their buildings or property as a result of rioting, can seek compensation under the Riots Damage Act.”
Jon commented: “Although not on the scale as in other cities, businesses in Leicester still experienced large groups of people attacking their properties and have had to pay excess charges on insurance policies which will not now be reimbursed.
|
|
Worse still, some local businesses without insurance are particularly hit by this decision of the Police Authority.”
Given the timing of the Police Authority's decision it is understood that local businesses are now too late to apply for other sources of funding, such as the High Street Fund.
Jon has therefore asked the Prime Minister if there is other funding in place to help the 32 business owners affected by the disturbances in August and to personally intervene to ensure the businesses get the compensation they need. |
 |
|
|
Jon stressed: “If it had not been the Christmas recess I would certainly have raised this decision of Leicestershire Police Authority and its affect on Leicester businesses on the floor of the House of Commons.”

Jon Ashworth MP visits the Saffron Resource Centre |
Friday December 16 2011 |
|
Jon Ashworth MP ivisited the Saffron Resource Centre on Friday 16 December where he met with representatives of the agencies that operate out of the Centre and report back on his work in the area.
The Saffron Resource Centre was established in 1975 for the benefit of the residents of the Saffron Lane and the surrounding areas, including Eyres Monsell and Aylestone.
Jon visited the Resource Centre earlier in the year and will report back on his work in the Saffron area. This has included visits to the Linwood Centre, a patch walk around Tic Toc Park, a Community Clean-Up Day in Neston Gardens and Neston Road, and calling a meeting at the Saffron Lane Working Men's Club to discuss support for Leicester's working Men's Clubs.
Jon stated:
“Youth unemployment and the high cost of credit are important issues in the local area. I have pushed the government to take action on these matters and asked the Prime Minister what has happened to his pledge to ‘reverse the trend of rising youth unemployment'. I also asked the local Credit Union, Clockwise, to attend the Resource Centre which it has now doing.”
Jon hosted a round table discussion on the work of the different agencies and projects, how they link in with one another, and the difficulties they are all facing in the current climate of cuts.
|
|
|
Bev Hall, Centre Manager, commented: “The Resource Centre provides services for the whole community, from children attending sessions at the Saffron Acres allotment project, to the elderly members of our community at the Day Centre run by Saffcare at Southfields Drive Community Centre.”
Jon commented: “It is clear that the Saffron Resource Centre, along with the Linwood Centre, is a vital asset to the Saffron Estate and surrounding area. At a time of cuts that are too deep and too quick, including changes and reductions to welfare benefits, it is crucial that such services are available locally and are embedded within the community and I will continue to argue that the government has a responsibility to fund such local provision.” |

I particularly wanted to back the campaign at the Millennium Fish Bar because the owners, Paul and Hema Martin have committed so much energy and enthusiasm to backing the appeal. They are an inspiration to us all."
"As a new father myself, I know how much we want to be able to make Christmas a really special time, but for many families that is a real struggle."
Jon has invited one of the City's social workers along to the visit to thank them for the work they do with children throughout the year and the vital part they play in making sure that the toys from the campaign reach the families who need them.

Jon Ashworth MP supports campaign to ‘save local radio' |
Friday December 2 2011 |
|
Jon Ashworth MP supports campaign to ‘save local radio' and speaks up for BBC Radio Leicester.
Jon joined up with campaigners outside BBC Radio Leicester demonstrating against planned BBC local radio cuts. The proposals would mean BBC Radio Leicester cut by up to 20 per cent forcing reductions in staff and output.
Radio Leicester would also be forced to share afternoon programming with Radio Nottingham and Derby.
Jon said “We are all rightly proud of BBC Radio Leicester – it is the oldest local radio station in the country – and the quality of its output and journalism is second to none.
|
|
It is valued by residents across the City and County and provides a vital public service. Whether it's at times of a big freeze or when the city experienced disturbances such as this past summer, BBC Radio Leicester provides a key role in getting important up to date information out to people.
“Equally I also know from my own appearances on Radio Leicester that they provide important balanced scrutiny of our local politicians – that's absolutely vital in a democracy."
“I've spoken in Parliament against these cuts to our local radio station and I was delighted to lend my support to the campaign. We have to save BBC Radio Leicester!”
