Jon Ashworth MP is calling on the Government to change course after today’s figures show the Police numbers have fallen |

Jon Ashworth MP is calling on the Government to change course after today’s figures show the Police numbers have fallen to the lowest for nearly a decade, including the loss of 175 at Leicestershire Police since March 2010.
The figures show that there are now nearly 10,000 fewer officers on the streets, with the majority of the officers lost coming from 999, neighbourhood and traffic response units - the officers we rely on in an emergency.
Jon Ashworth is calling for the Government to change course and implement a proper plan to cut crime, not just police officers.
Jon said: “People in Leicestershire want to see police on their streets, but these figures show the Tory-led Government's cuts mean that there are already 175 police officers already lost from our local communities, with more cuts to come.”
“Crime fell by 43 per cent with Labour according to the British Crime Survey. The same survey shows this progress has ground to a halt under the current Government during which time we now know they have cut nearly 10,000 officers.”

“We need real change from this Government to make our streets safer. Prioritising neighbourhood policing, taking anti-social behaviour seriously, tackling the causes of crime with police and local authorities working together, ensuring no privitisation of core policing, and building strong communities with respect to all and responsibility by all.”

Jon Ashworth MP speaks in Parliament about the decision to end Glenfield’s children’s heart services |
July 18 2012 |
Jon Ashworth MP speaks in Parliament about the decision to end Glenfield’s children’s heart services and move the children’s ECMO service to Birmingham.
In the Commons debate, which was secured following pressure from Jon and other Leicestershire MPs including Liz Kendall, Jon asked: “Where do our constituents in the east of the country, between Newcastle and London, go? That is something else that many of my constituents have raised with me.”
During the debate, Jon pushed the government to publish the evidence upon which the decision to move the children’s ECMO unit away from Leicester to Birmingham was made.
Jon stated: “I accept that the Minister takes advice from experts, but given that there is one set of experts making one argument, presumably he receives advice from a different set. If he published his evidence, those of us who are laymen on health policy can try to make our own judgments as those experts scrutinise one another’s work.”
“Concerns have been raised about the Birmingham facility and whether it can deal with the new ECMO service."
"It was suggested to me that if the 80 ECMO nurses at Leicester are not prepared to leave Glenfield, it will take up to eight years for nurses in Birmingham to be trained to the appropriate level of expertise.”
Before the debate Jon, Liz and other MPs met Health Minister Simin Burns to speak out against the decision to move the children’s ECMO unit away from Leicester to Birmingham

July 16 2012 |
Jon Ashworth MP has today welcomed the Government’s confirmation it is to complete the electrification of the Midland Mainline and start upgrade work on the Leicester junction.
Jon has been campaigning hard on this issue alongside other East Midlands MPs, Leicester City Council’s Deputy Mayor Rory Palmer, trade unions and the business community.
Jon said: “I am pleased that the Government has finally decided to continue the electrification of the Midland Mainline. It is at present the slowest northbound route out of London and is the only main line to London yet to be electrified.”
“I have lobbied both the Trains Minister Theresa Villiers and Business Secretary Vince Cable to discuss the continuation of the electrification of the line in recent weeks. I have also raised this issue in Parliament a number of times.”
“Today’s announcement will not only will this mean shorter journey times and improved performance and reliability, it will also result in operational cost savings and increased passenger revenues.”
“Overall Midland Mainline electrification will be a real boost to the Leicester economy.”
Speaking in the House of Commons today Jon also said: “We all want to see this as soon as possible. Will the Secretary of State give an undertaking to start the work closer to 2014 than 2019?” |

Jon Ashworth MP to visit Gujarati Speakers Lunch Club at
Catherine House |
Friday July 13 2012 |
Jon is to visit a lunch club, for elderly Asian members of our community, on Friday 13 July with Councillor Manjula Sood.
Jon said: “I’m really looking forward to visiting Age UK’s lunch club for the local elderly Asian population and hopefully getting some lunch too. This is just the sort of scheme I want to support as the local MP and hope can go from strength to strength in the future.”
The Friday lunch club for Gujarati speakers has been running for over 15 years and provides culturally-appropriate food to between 30 and 35 people every week.
Councillor Manjula Sood, an Assistant Mayor at the City Council, said:“Services provided at Catherine House by Age UK are so important for Leicester’s ethnic population. Not only do the services reduce social isolation by providing opportunities to meet people, but those attending the project can also access educational, health and exercise classes.”
Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland Minority Ethnic Services in Leicester are ran from Catherine House, which is a vibrant multi-cultural resource centre for people over 50.
Catherine House can be contacted on 0116 249 8787.
Jon commented:“This is a fantastic scheme which brings people together from different ethnic minority backgrounds. I’m really looking forward to having lunch with my constituents, and I really hope that the lunch club continues to be a success.”

Jon Ashworth speaks up for Leicester businesses hit by double dip recession at PMQS |
Wednesday July 04 2012 |
After the disappointing news today that another Leicester business has gone out of business, Jon Ashworth spoke up for Leicester businesses direct to the Prime Minister.
Speaking in the Commons today at PMQs Jon Ashworth said:“Leicester is bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister’s double-dip recession, with the sad news today that yet another business is going under, resulting in the loss of local jobs.
In that context, was he as disappointed as I was at the figures released last month showing that lending to small businesses was down by £1.7 billion? Is it not clear that the Chancellor’s credit easing policies are not working?”
It followed the news reported in the Leicester Mercury that Leicester building company, Philip James, have called in the liquidators with the loss of 23 jobs locally.
Jon Ashworth added “I’m saddened to see local job losses which is why I hope the Prime Minister will change course and implement urgent measures that will boost the economy and support jobs across Leicester.” |

Jon Ashworth MP to speak at Baby Gear’s Open Day and to praise the work of volunteers |
Wednesday July 04 2012 |
Jon is to visit Baby Gear’s Open Day where people can find out about the charity’s workshops and courses.
Jon said: “I’m really looking forward to visiting Baby Gear’s Open Day and meeting some of the volunteers that are essential to the success of the project. It is vital that organisations such as Baby Gear provide learning and training opportunities to vulnerable adults and the long term unemployed, especially when the economy is in a recession and the number of paid opportunities is limited.”
Baby Gear was established 32 years ago and provides good quality refurbished baby equipment to an increasing number of local people.
Maya Vansia, Project Manager, stated: “The volunteers at Baby Gear refurbish baby equipment in the workshops under the instructions of our trainers. The volunteers also have the opportunity to attend courses in various subjects that will increase their self-confidence and assist them to enter the workplace.”
“If anyone has any baby equipment that they no longer use, such as cots, highchairs, buggies, bedding and baby clothes, then please bring them along to our base in the City Centre or please call and we may be able to collect the items from your house.”
Baby Gear can be contacted on
0116 251 6415
Jon commented: “The success of Baby Gear depends on the time, expertise and skills of the volunteers, and I’d encourage anyone who would like to assist to get in contact with the project. And at the same time, if people are struggling to buy new baby equipment for their children then please come and use this excellent service.”

Jon Ashworth MP meets the Business Secretary to push the case for the electrification of Midland Mainline electrification |
Monday July 02 2012 |
Jon Ashworth is meeting with Vince Cable MP, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, to request that the government commits itself to the electrification of the Midland Mainline.
Jon stated: “Unfortunately, I cannot be in my Constituency for the Olympic Torch Relay, but it is important that the government truly understands the economic benefits that electrification of the line will bring to Leicester, and the whole of the Midlands.”
Jon highlighted the economic advantages of electrification in a Commons Debate in February this year and he will re-iterate that investment in the electrification of the line will result in much needed growth in the economy and will make Leicester and the wider area more attractive for inward investment.
Jon commented: “I have already met with the Transport Minister to encourage the government to give this vital project the go-ahead, and I intend to push the matter again with the Business Secretary when I meet with him on Monday. Investment in the East Midlands’ infrastructure is essential especially in times of recession.”
"I am of course hugely disappointed to be missing the Olympic Torch come through Leicester, but as I’ve always said, fighting for jobs and investment is my top priority for Leicester, and I think it is important that I take this opportunity to press the case for Midland Mainline electrification with the Secretary of State for Business.”
Currently the Midland Mainline runs on diesel and is the slowest northbound route out of London. It is the only mainline to London that has not been electrified or where there are no immediate plans to electrify. |
